Recently, Knoxville Leadership Foundation’s Amachi Knoxville mentoring program teamed up with Best Buy and members of Sevier Heights Baptist Church to host the first Nintendo Wii Game Tournament. A total of seventeen teams squared off in Wii Sports Bowling in a single elimination competition. Best Buy provided $50 gift cards to each winner as well as five flat screen TVs and the Nintendo Wii gaming equipment to make the event work. After multiple challenging competitors, finally the winners emerged; Jada Davenport and Kevin Nolan averaging five strikes in a row in the final game. Nolan, a mentor, graciously relinquished his prize to the second place Amachi Mentee Brandon Wise. In addition to the Wii Tournament, current mentors and mentees, as well as children on the Amachi Knoxville waiting list, engaged in carnival style games, fire truck tours, prize drawings, a karate demonstration, and a BBQ feast, all provided by SHBC. Both Kristina LaBerge from SHBC and Stacy Wright of Best Buy commented “This event MUST be repeated next year; it was truly a great time.” Amachi Knoxville serves a very special group of Knoxville children, those with a parent incarcerated in state or federal prison.
