First in Forum Series: Child Abuse and Neglect

The first in a series of community forums that focuses on youth related issues hosted by the Knoxville Leadership Foundation focuses on Child Abuse and Neglect. This panel discussion will be held in Cherokee Health System’s Community Room (2018 Western Avenue) and is from 5:00 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. on February 26, 2009.

Child abuse consists of any act of commission or omission that endangers or impairs a child’s physical or emotional health and development. Child abuse includes any damage done to a child which cannot be reasonably explained and which is often represented by an injury or series of injuries appearing to be non-accidental in nature.

Children are suffering from a hidden epidemic of child abuse and neglect. While 3 million reports of child abuse are made every year in the United States, experts estimate that the actual number of incidents of abuse and neglect is three times greater than reported.

The panel is made up of organizations that have participated in Knoxville Leadership Foundation’s Center for Communities (CFC) program and other subject area experts. The CFC organizations participating in this first forum are:

Childhelp Tennessee partners with public and private agencies to provide all services needed by adolescent abuse victims in a single child-friendly location.

CASA of the Tennessee Heartland provides highly trained volunteer advocates for children who come under the protection of juvenile court due to child abuse and neglect.

Urban Family Outreach serves the needs of at-risk children in the North Knoxville community. Their mission is to nurture character, community, and hope in children and families in their neighborhood. They provide safe places for children to learn and play so they can grow to be faithful, successful, contributing members of their community.

Other panel members are to be announced. Teachers, youth pastors, parents and anyone else serving youth is invited to attend.  To RSVP, call (865) 524-2774 or e-mail .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).

There will be a forum held each month from February to May focusing on specific challenges youth encounter and how to deal with them. There will be opportunities for questions and answers from this panel of experts that work with children day in and day out.
