Alternative Spring Break Comes to Knoxville

March 7, 2011

While many college students will be heading off to the beach this spring break, approximately 50 students from various universities will be taking part in a service-orignted alternative spring break in Knoxville. Students from Gonzaga University, Tampa University, Texas A & M and the University of Tennessee will participate in Knoxville Leadership Foundation’s (KLF) Operation Backyard minor home repair between March 7th and March 18th.

Operation Backyard offers free home repair services to low income homeowners who cannot afford the repairs. The program coordinates efforts with student and adult volunteers to complete projects such as replacing roofs, building wheelchair ramps and painting. Operation Backyard offers year-round repairs serving over 70 families per year. Volunteers have the choice to serve on one-day to multi-day projects.
